Chiropractic Treatment using Spinal Manipulation
An alternative medical system, Chiropractic takes a different approach than standard medicine in treating and preventing mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. The concepts of chiropractic are:- Human body has a powerful self-healing ability, body’s function and its structure (mainly the spine) are related, and the goal of chiropractic therapy is to normalize this relationship. The treatment includes manual therapy like spinal manipulation, handling soft tissues and other joints and also involves exercises and health and lifestyle counseling. The chiropractic profession although being primarily based on the use of the spinal adjustment, uses many other techniques for treating the spine, as well as other joints and tissues. A modern chiropractor specializes in spinal adjustments and uses a wide range of methods aiming to address an array of neuromusculoskeletal and general health issues. Examples include dry needling (similar to acupuncture), functional electrical stimulation, nutritional recommendations, soft tissue therapy, strength training and traction. Spinal manipulation, is the most common treatment used in chiropractic care and is known as “spinal adjustment” or “chiropractic adjustment” by the chiropractors as well as some osteopaths. Spinal manipulation is a therapeutic improvement performed on synovial joints in the spinal column for Chiropractic cure. The zygapophysial joints are the most common ones which are manipulated others include the atlantoaxial, costotransverse, costovertebral, lumbosacral, occipitoatlantal and sacroiliac costovertebral joints are also synovial joints of the spine. Spinal manipualtion has been effective in following cures: 1. Temporary relief of the musculoskeletal pain and Chiropractic Cure. 2. Time to recover from acute back pain (RAND) is shortened. 3. Altered sensorimotor integration. 4. An increase is felt in Passive range of motion (ROM). 5. Position of the sacroiliac joint not altered. Whereas, local discomfort, headache, tiredness, or radiating discomfort are common side effects of spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation is a passive manual careful skill in which a three-joint complex is taken far the normal range of movement, but not that past to damage or dislocate the joint for which chiropractic tables can be used. Its defining factor is a Dynamic thrust, a sudden force that attempts to increase a joint’s range of motion and causes an audible release. More generally, spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) details techniques where the hands are used to adjust, manipulate, massage, mobilize, stimulate, apply traction to, or otherwise influence the spine and related tissues and other chiropractic cures. The various adjustment methods include:- 1. Toggle Drop – In this method of chiropractic adjustment the chiropractor, using crossed hands, presses down firmly on a particular area of the spine. The chiropractor then, with a quick and precise thrust, adjusts the spine. This improves the mobility in the vertebral joints. 2. Lumbar Roll (aka side posture) – In this the patient is positioned on his or her side, the chiropractic doctor then applies a quick and precise manipulative thrust to the misaligned vertebra, so as to return it to its proper position. 3. Release Work – A gentle pressure is applied by the chiropractor using his or her fingertips to separate the vertebrae. 4. Table adjustments – The patient is made to lie on a special chiropractic table with sections that drop down. The chiropractor then applies a quick thrust at the same time the section drops. Lighter adjustment is provided with the dropping of the table without the twisting positions that can accompany other techniques. Various chiropractic tables are available like Tony’s Tables, Inline Tables, etc. 5. Instrument adjustments – This is the gentlest methods for adjusting the spine. The chiropractor uses a spring-loaded activator instrument to perform the adjustment on the patient who lies on the chiropractic table face down. Adjustments on animals as well can be performed using this method. 6. Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) – When the patient is unresponsive to all traditional adjustments, this is performed by a chiropractic doctor certified in this technique in a hospital outpatient setting.
