Acne – Is it Curable?
Acne is a skin condition that most teenagers suffer from. Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Acne is a skin condition that occurs due to the overproduction of oil by the oil glands of the skin. Acne is a serious problem and it is not fun. Acne is a skin disease that affects more than 17 million individuals in the United States alone.
Skin lesion cultures to rule out gram-negative folliculitis are warranted when no response to treatment occurs or when improvement is not maintained. Skin irritation with peeling and redness may be associated with the use of topical retinoids. Skin pores contain the sebaceous glands that produces sebum, a natural way to lubricate the skin and hair. Skin cells are not being shed normally, and these sticky cells block the skin’s hair follicles, trapping the sebum.
Sebaceous glands are attached to hair follicles and are found mostly on the face, neck, back and chest. Sebaceous glands produce oil (sebum), which combines with dead skin cells and creates a plug in the pore. Sebaceous glands become more active during periods of elevated hormone activity. Treatment of the most resistant cases of acne includes the use of isotretinoin (Accutane), a drug that decreases sebaceous secretions.
Acne is not an easy disease to bear and you are obviously in pain. Acne is a complex problem, but one we are learning more about every day. Acne is so common that it’s considered a normal part of puberty. Acne is an equal opportunity destroyer, with no regard to race, culture, gender or even age. Acne is not curable, but it is controllable; proper treatment helps you to feel and look better and may prevent scars.
