Excessive facial sweating is also referred to as facial hyperhidrosis. When a person sweats excessively, especially on the face, he constantly suffers embarrassment due to the social implications this condition puts the sufferer through. The sweating occurs even when you are not under any particular stress or doing any physical activity. It is no wonder that a person suffering from excessive facial sweating becomes paranoid, nervous, embarrassed and mentally irritated most of the time. People who are about to give a speech, or those who are about to take an exam or undergo any other stressful situations are often found to sweat excessively. This is because their sympathetic nervous system is working overtime.
There are several treatments that can reduce excessive facial sweating. There are non-surgical methods which can lessen facial sweating effectively. These treatment options are easy to use and are often administered in cases that are not considered serious. Antiperspirants are one of the most popular facial hyperhidrosis treatments. There are also prescription drugs that patients with this kind of condition regularly take to control excessive sweating on their faces. But these drugs must only be taken when advised by a medical expert. Botox injections are sometimes recommended but they can be very expensive and the side effects are widely known. The effects of Botox are not permanent and usually last only for a few months.
One known facial hyperhidrosis treatment that involves surgery is a procedure called ETS or Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathicotomy. This is considered an invasive operation and said to effectively decrease extreme sweating on the face. The patient will be injected with an anesthesia to keep the sympathetic nervous system from working too hard. Those who have already gone an ETS would attest that this is a safe procedure but complications and setbacks can also happen after the operation. While the sweating on the face is reduced, other areas of the body begin to acquire the condition. This procedure is usually done on people who sweat excessively on their palms but has somehow been found to effectively control facial sweating.
