Mark Armen, a Santa Monica resident brings BaitTank, an innovative solution to keep the cigarette butts out of the bay
“If one littered butt can kill a fish, then one collected butt can save a fish,” says Mark Armen as his eyes wander off to the ocean that stretches in front of him, tranquil and changing; once of blue and now then crimson. “When I found out that littered cigarette can kill fishes and other marine life, I was ready to act,” he continues referring to a 2009 study conducted by Professor Richard Gersberg of San Diego State University.
According to the study chemicals from just one filtered cigarette butt had the ability to kill half the fish living in a 1-liter container of water. Armen’s self confessed obsession with the environment specially protecting the marine life propelled him to dig deeper into ‘cigarette litter’. He soon emerged with facts and figures that he was more shocked rather pleased to discover. “Nearly 38 percent of cigarette butt litter occurs because there is no bin nearby and an astounding 62 percent because of lack of awareness about cigarette litter on our marine life,” he states blatantly as a group of fishermen gather around mounting their hooks over the fence.
One of the main challenges that this Loyola Marymount alumnus recalls was to create something that “attracts and educates the smokers while blending into the beach backdrop”. Inspired by local grassroots organizations like Heal the Bay and Surf rider foundation and driven by the desire to create a business model which focuses on environment, led Armen to the creation of BaitTank – a simple yet innovative shark-themed cigarette depository.
“Cigarette butts act as bait for the fish,” says the MBA graduate from Spain talking about the inspiration behind the design and name. Armen further adds, “unlike other cigarette depositories, BaitTank not only doubles up as a convenient way for pedestrians to take action but also provides a platform for ecological messaging.” On the front, the tank communicates the dangers of cigarette butts to a wooden pier, and on the side it has a “Fish-Saved Meter” to communicate the dangers of cigarette butts to marine life. The tank also engages public attention towards cigarette litter hazards with slogans like ‘save some fish, feed me’, ’save the pier, deposit here’ elaborates the former Santa Anna resident. BaitTanks effectiveness in meeting its dual roles can be gauged from its success in cities of Capitola and Santa Cruz.
Save Our Shores an organization in Capitola installed BaitTank cigarette depositories along high traffic smoking areas in Esplanade, the Santa Cruz Wharf, and Beach Street in Santa Cruz and saw a reduction in cigarette liter by nearly 60 percent. Also the container which has the capacity of 5000 cigarette butts does not require frequent emptying and helps in reducing the cost as well as the workload of the city crews.
It therefore does not come as a surprise that the city of Santa Monica supported BaitTank wholeheartedly. “Neal Shapiro and other officials from the Santa Monica Office of Sustainability and Environment were very helpful and introduced me to the pier management,” says Armen who currently works with a vibrant green community called Greenopolis.
The newly installed tanks can be seen displayed at the entrance of the pier and at 7 other locations throughout the pier.
“I love it, in fact they should be added to parking lots and beach lots too,” says Santa Monica resident Don Chomick, as he makes a brief stopover from his afternoon power run near BaitTank. Another local resident Richard Kelly couldn’t agree more. “When people are walking they don’t tend to smoke,” he says pointing at the BaitTank receptacle placed at the entrance of the pier. You do it when you are sitting down or in a relaxed state like on the beach or at the bottom of the pier.”
Kelly also points out the need for receptacles to display messages in foreign languages considering the heavy foreign tourist flow that descends on pier every year. “It is really nice,” says Montana resident, Pam Botswana who was visiting Santa Monica pier with her family. She hopes that the “smokers will use it.”
Even though the Santa Monica city added the pier to the non-smoking zones last year after two fires were started when tossed cigarette butts got lodged in between the pier planks, it is not uncommon to spot people smoking in and around the pier. “Whatever you think people smoke no matter what,” says Armen adding that some of the cities have been resistant to the idea of installing cigarette receptacles, because of the fear of encouraging smokers.
While happy with the recognition that BaitTank has received within a short span of time, especially in his hometown, Santa Monica, he hopes that BaitTank will be able to garner more traction and support, especially from tobacco industry. “They have the resources,” says Armen pointing at the obvious players, who he feels can play a major role in preventing cigarette litter. Meanwhile he continues to document, design and devise strategies on how to attract cigarette litter; one butt at a time.
