The best over the counter acne products mainly contain the ingredients Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic acid or Sulfur. The products are available as acne washes in the form soaps, gels foams or cleansers and treatments in made up of creams, gels and foams. Products containing Benzoyl Peroxide are the most prolific but it is not suitable for everyone, a small percentage of people may be allergic to benzoyl peroxide and redness, itching or peeling of the skin my occur. If this happens products containing Benzoyl Peroxide should be avoided.
Light Therapy Lamps. Light therapy lamps have become very popular recently as they can be used easily at home and are a quick form of treatment. Advances in technology using LED technology have allowed these acne lamps to be produced at very affordable prices for home use. The lamps come as blue light therapy lamps, red light therapy lamps or a combined blue/red light therapy lamp.
Blue light therapy targets and kills the acne bacteria thereby clearing the skin of acne.

Moderate to Severe Acne:

Topical antibiotics (applied to the skin) are products such as clindamycin or erythromycin or combined products containing both benzoyl peroxide and a topical antibiotic such as clindamycin (Duac, Benzaclin). Topical retinoids such as tretinoin (Retin A and others), adapalene (Differin), and tazarotene (Tazorac). Combinations of tretinoin and clindamycin (Ziana).
Oral antibiotics include tetracycline, doxycycline, or minocycline. Also hormonal therapies such as oral contraceptives and isotretinoin.
